Will you follow robot influencers?

Image 1. Click to open in original size.

Imagine an instagrammer like any other, but all made up and guided by algorithms. Looks like a human, writes like a human, “does” what humans do and documents their life online. You will never meet them in person, because their life is a made-up story unfolding in realtime. As if Gulliver’s travels had been reported over a period of years, with small snippets every day, but without one-eyed giants, Lilliputians and other extraordinary events.

Can you imagine following someone on social media who lives an ordinary life, attends events and goes shopping, but has been 100 percent made up by business people, with the sole purpose of making more money?

This already happens. Miquela is one of them, Gabrielle Löwengrip another. Pure fiction.

These robots live an unattainable life, its ridiculous for people to the aspire for something they'll never be able to get. I also think its a little creepy Silence

How bizarre! I don't think I will follow any to be honest, but who knows? Maybe I already am!

It is a scary thought but how would you know if you are following a bot or not?

Happy creating!

My two examples above state in their bio that they are robots, but I guess sooner or later there will be those who don't. Would you think of the phenomenon differently if what’s in their Instagram was pure fiction? A superhero, criminal or princess detailing their challenges and successes. Would you consider following something like that on social media?

The fiction of it all may be appealing to some, but if I knew it was a robot it just wouldn't be relatable enough?

That's true. A robot likely won't write good fiction any time soon.

I looked at one of the accounts and I saw that a number of people that I follow follow the robot influencer. I think it’s kinda crazy.

Maybe they didn't notice that its a robot, or they might be curious.

#7 You made me want to check that! Two of the accounts I follow also follow @lilmiquela but no-one who I follows the other one.
